Want to work steps away from a stage where nationally renowned authors give lectures on craft, or up-and-coming writers read from their latest works? Are you passionate about the literary arts, creating community, and opening up the literary world to everyone who loves books or has a drive to write?
Hugo House staff and volunteers are enthusiastic, committed people who value and want to work toward making arts programming accessible to all, advancing community-driven change initiatives, and centering antiracism and racial equity in the literary sphere.
We encourage applications from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) and other people underrepresented in literary arts administration. All full-time Hugo House positions receive a generous benefits package, including holiday and vacation, medical, dental, and vision benefits, and discounts on Hugo House classes.

Teach at Hugo House
We’re looking for talented, enthusiastic, generous instructors in all genres—nonfiction, fiction, poetry and performance (spoken word, song, stage, screen), as well as reading classes (please see our catalog for examples).
Our teachers are contracted for individual classes and we review class proposals every quarter. See our current class offerings to get a sense of the course description format and the types of courses we offer. We love seeing new ideas and classes that are of the moment in addition to craft basics.
To apply, please sign in to our Teacher Portal and submit:
- 1–2 page CV
- 1-page statement of your teaching philosophy and how you’ll apply it at Hugo House
- One sample course description with a syllabus or break-down of class content (no more than a page) modeled after our online course catalog
Submissions for course proposals for Spring 2024 must be received by October 25, 2023 for full consideration to appear in the catalog. Spring quarter runs April 8 – June 16, 2024.
Teach Youth Classes
We believe that youth voices are worth amplifying. Our programs offer opportunities for youth from all walks of life to craft their voices.
Youth teaching artists play a critical role in youth education, so we look for teachers who are creative, attentive, holistic in their approach, adaptive to individual student needs, able to teach through a social justice lens, and are devoted lifelong learners themselves. Volunteer
Volunteers are an invaluable part of Hugo House. In our first years, volunteers helped remodel the House and get us off the ground. Today, volunteers do essential work for all of our programs.
