Writing with Folklore & Myth: Resilience, Community, & Grief
In "summer, somewhere," Danez Smith writes, “don't call us dead, call us alive somewhere better / that boy was Trayvon [Martin], now called RainKing." This course examines the use of myth and folklore as a tool of resilience, community, and grief. We will look at voodoo, African folk hero, and the syncretic influence of European mythology and religion in Black literature. Participants will generate poems every week in response to various readings, visual art, and generative prompts.
